However, it has seen significant home price appreciation over the years, making this a valuable place to invest in real estate. Homes in Clayton include quaint single-story properties in quiet neighborhoods and large estates situated in golf club communities.

Lifestyle and Attractions

With a population of more than 18,000, Clayton is located about 17 miles southeast of Raleigh. The town has seen significant growth over the years, primarily because of its proximity to the Research Triangle and access to major highways, including I-40, US-70 and NC-42. The town calls itself “the premier community for active families” due to the area’s focus on families with community events, top-notch schools, and family-friendly attractions. Furthermore, Clayton is situated near plenty of parks and places for outdoor recreation, including Clemmons Educational State Forest, Clayton River Walk on the Neuse, Legend Park, and Community Park.

The Clayton Center is a beautifully renovated music, entertainment and event venue in the heart of historic downtown Clayton. Other cultural venues include the Clayton Community Center, Clayton Visual Arts, and more. The community of Clayton comes together with a number of annual events and festivals, including the Annual Youth Artist Festival, Lights on the Neuse, and their most popular event, the Clayton Harvest Festival. Clayton is home to construction equipment manufacturer Caterpillar, in addition to a handful of healthcare companies, including Hospira, Novo Nordisk and Grifols. Residents of Clayton may commute to Raleigh or other nearby communities for employment with a reasonable drive.

Nearby Schools and Higher Education

Clayton is part of the Johnston County School System. In Clayton, there are seven public elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. In Johnston County, there are four private schools, two of which are located in Clayton — the Academy of Hope and Southside Christian School. Clayton has no institutions of higher learning in its boundaries, but is located near a number of colleges and universities, including Johnston Community College, Duke University, North Carolina State University, and more.

History

The community now known as Clayton was built on a road cut by Governor Tryon’s troops around the year 1770 during the American Revolution. Almost 100 years later, the railroad arrived to town, and the town was renamed from “Stalling’s Station” to Clayton at its incorporation in 1869.

After the Civil War, the railroad expanded, which allowed businesses, such as lumber mills and cotton gins, to flourish as a result. By the early 1900s, Clayton had become a major hub for the cotton, watermelon and tobacco industries. In 1907, the Raleigh Evening Times wrote that there was “more money per capita in Clayton than any city its size in the world.”

Eventually, the state of North Carolina transitioned from its agricultural economy to an industrial, service-oriented one, and Clayton followed suit. The establishment of Research Triangle Park, and the impressive growth of the state’s capital, made Clayton a desirable and thriving satellite city.
