Harrisburg’s proximity to Charlotte gives families more than 50 private schools to choose from, in addition to the nearby Village Christian Academy and Hope Academy. Harrisburg is located near several universities and colleges, including the renowned University of North Carolina at Charlotte located just a few miles away. This public research university is the largest institution of higher education in the Charlotte region, with more than 28,000 students enrolled.

 

History

Scots-Irish settlers arrived in the area that is now known as Harrisburg between 1732 and 1765. One settler, Robert Harris, accumulated many landholdings during this time. His descendents sold some of the land for the right-of-way for a railroad, which was named Harris Depot. The railroad attracted business, and a town center was subsequently built around it. By 1874, the hamlet and depot were renamed as Harrisburg. The economics of this small town shifted from rails to the road with the 1923 arrival of the new highway, N.C. 49, and the original Harrisburg Depot railroad station closed in 1933.
