History

Franklin was originally established as “Franklin Depot” in 1839 on land owned by Shemuel Kearney. His home, built in 1759 by his grandfather, was originally located south of town and is currently the oldest residence in Franklin County. The home was moved to Louisburg in 2009 for restoration. Franklin Depot was changed to Franklinton in 1842, when the town was officially incorporated.

Agriculture was once the economic base of North Carolina, which can still be observed in the many fields and farms located in and around Franklinton. Much like in other areas in North Carolina, the textile industry followed farming as a new economy ushered in by the Industrial Age. Franklinton is home to the historic Sterling Cotton Mill, founded by Samuel C. Vann in 1895. It remained in the family for years until it was purchased by manufacturers of Fruit of the Loom products in 1971, and eventually closed in 1991. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
