History
Quaker and German immigrants originally settled into the area now known as High Point for its great location near the intersections of two main transportation paths, the North Carolina Railroad and Western Plank Road. The area was named because it was geographically the “high point” of the railroad line. High Point was officially incorporated in 1859 and started growing with an emphasis on tobacco, woodworking and textiles. Its first furniture factory opened in 1889, and it was later nicknamed the “Furniture Capital of the World”.
