Indian Trail is a suburban town situated on the southeast edge of the Greater Charlotte Region. This family-oriented town has seen rapid growth since the 1990s, boasting a well-connected sense of community, beautiful parks, and convenient proximity to the city.
Real Estate
The vast majority of homes in Indian Trail were built after 1990, so there are mostly large, modern houses with updated features. The combination of high income and low housing costs in Indian Trail is drawing new homeowners to the community. In fact, NerdWallet.com named Indian Trail the second-best place for homeownership in the state of North Carolina. With newer homes and a proximity to Charlotte, this is an extremely desirable place to call home.
Lifestyle and Attractions
Indian Trail is a suburban town located on the outskirts of Charlotte. It is considered one of the fastest growing towns in one of state’s fastest growing counties, as the population of Indian Trail increased from about 2,000 to nearly 40,000 since 1990. Family Circle Magazine once rated Indian Trail in the top ten cities to raise a family, as this is a friendly community nestled just outside the city. The town’s proximity to Center City Charlotte about 16 miles away puts a variety of options for employment, dining, shopping, and entertainment within reach. One of the town’s largest corporation headquarters is Radiator Specialty Company, one of the nation’s top producers of automotive products.
Indian Trail has a number of beautiful green spaces, including Crossing Paths Park, a site for community festivals and events, featuring an outdoor amphitheater, playground, walking path, picnic area, and more. The town’s newest park, Chestnut Square Park, has a large playground and a variety of sporting facilities. The Indian Trail Cultural Arts Center is located within the old town hall building in Indian Trail, and is the home to classes, workshops, programs and galleries. Indian Trail’s unique Extreme Ice Center offers public skating, ice-skating lessons and ice hockey. The community comes together with several events and festivals throughout the year, including Family Fun Day, Hop to IT!, the Piedmont Cultural Arts Festival, and a popular July 4th Parade.
Nearby Schools and Higher Education
Indian Trail has seven schools in Union County Public Schools and three private schools in town, plus more than 55 private schools located in nearby Charlotte. The neighboring towns of Matthews and Monroe host Central Piedmont Community College and South Piedmont Community College, respectively. Otherwise, Indian Trail residents may access a number of nearby colleges and universities, including Queens University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Wingate University.
History
Unlike many Southern towns, Indian Trail does not have a lengthy history, as it was largely undeveloped until its rapid growth in the 1990s. As the name implies, Indian Trail was originally part of a trading route traveled by Waxhaw Indians. Scots-Irish settlers started inhabiting the area, and it subsequently transitioned into a farming community. Indian Trail wasn’t incorporated as a town until 1907, and it wasn’t until the 1990s that it saw substantial growth, so there is no historic downtown or old structures in the community. The Indian Trail Arts and Historical Society was established in 2010 to research and preserve the town’s history and share its heritage through arts and cultural programs.
