Mauldin, who used his political clout as lieutenant governor of South Carolina to convince the Greenville Laurens Railroad Company to reroute its line through the village instead of bypassing it. The city became a ghost town during the Civil War, as most citizens left town to fight, and the city was officially incorporated in 1969.
