Lifestyle and Attractions

Oak Ridge is a small town situated in a peaceful setting on the outskirts of the city, presenting a lifestyle of quiet and peace for its nearly 7,000 residents. Greensboro and Winston-Salem are each located about 25 minutes from Oak Ridge, and Kernersville is 14 minutes away, providing plenty of opportunities for dining, shopping, entertainment and employment. The highest percentage of workers in Oak Ridge are employed in the management, business and finance industries, and the short commute to these nearby cities makes Oak Ridge a quiet home base for executives. Community and recreational activity centers on Oak Ridge Town Park, an 80-acre park with lighted athletic fields, walking trails, a pond, open grassy areas, a playground and more. The Dog Park is very popular within the park, hosting an annual event called Canine Capers. There is also a Summer Music Series in the park that draws residents from Oak Ridge and neighboring towns.

Within an hour’s drive, residents may explore hiking trails at Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock State Parks. Historic sites in Oak Ridge include the Old Mill of Guilford and Stafford Farm. The town was named after the Oak Ridge Military Academy, a private, co-ed, college-preparatory military boarding school in the center of Oak Ridge. Annual community events and festivals include RidgeFest, the Annual Colfax Persimmon Festival, and more. Oak Ridge is also within an hour of Virginia and parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Oak Ridge has one public school within the Guilford County School System and there are at least 20 private institutions in neighboring Greensboro. Oak Ridge is also home to the Oak Ridge Military Academy, a private college-preparatory military boarding school. Oak Ridge contains no institutions of higher learning, but a reasonable commute brings many opportunities within reach. Nearby colleges and universities include Greensboro College, High Point University, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and more. The Donald Carmen Campus of Guilford Technical Community College is just 3 miles away.

History

Founded in 1852, the Oak Ridge Military Academy is the third-oldest military school in the nation and is the official military school of the state. The surrounding area that is now Oak Ridge, which previously consisted of rural farmland full of tobacco and strawberry fields, was named after the military academy. The town was officially incorporated in 1998, and soon became a hot spot for upscale housing developments due to its central location. In March 2017, Oak Ridge received a “Tree City” designation from the Arbor Day Foundation.
