The area now known as King was originally a cluster of tiny towns sharing a single church in 1812. A man named Charles King constructed a cabin in the area in 1826, and many years later, in 1840, a school was built, followed by a second church in 1873, and finally a general store and shoe shop.
Although the town saw significant growth, many still called the area “King’s Cabin”, and the name lasted for decades, even after the King family moved north due to their opposition to slavery. The first post office opened and a railroad was constructed in 1888, and the post office kept the name “King’s Cabin.”
Over time, roads, automobiles and highways arrived to the area, putting King’s Cabin on the map primarily because of its proximity to Winston-Salem. The area experienced more and more growth, and was officially incorporated as King in 1983. Charles King and his wife never returned to King, and never knew that the town was named after them.
